A lifelong writer, Erica discovered equal passion for digital storytelling in college. At SMU, she honed and combined her print and broadcast journalism skills and entrepreneurial interest; be it interviewing entrepreneurs as a D Magazine/D CEO intern or on her “Entrepreneurs with Erica” broadcast channel, Erica seized any opportunity to learn from people who built something from nothing.
Upon graduating, Erica joined the then-venerable Aspen Times as the 140-year-old newspaper’s government reporter. She also started and managed the organization’s social media pages—organically growing its accounts from zero to thousands of followers with no ad spend—and produced all digital content (co-hosting, filming, and editing daily ski reports, news packages, and more). As a daily reporter, Erica covered every beat from politics and business to breaking news and education over her Times career; a true trial-by-fire experience that shaped her (as she recounts in her op-ed above).
Erica worked her way up the newsrooms of Aspen’s competing daily newspapers, accepting the Aspen Daily News’ offer as Arts & Culture Editor and to start a magazine. As Founding Editor-in-Chief of Aspen Local—now Aspen’s premier lifestyle media outlet—Erica conceived, planned, and oversaw every aspect of the glossy, 130-page magazine. She also rebranded the Daily News’ Art & Entertainment section, launched a weekly publication, and co-hosted the Aspen Local morning news broadcast at the top of Aspen Mountain (accessible only via snowmobile at that hour).
Erica returned to hard news at the onset of COVID and helped navigate the newspaper through the pandemic. Amid a constantly evolving news cycle, she reported on the pressing yet unprecedented issues and nuances that the pandemic raised, from public health and mental health to the legalities of vaccine mandates and employer relations. Post-pandemic, she explored its long-term impacts, like a two-part deep dive examining how it withered the Roaring Fork Valley’s media landscape (Colorado Press Association 2021 Best Feature winner).
She later left the Daily News’ helm to launch her own media business and begin tackling her most formidable yet worthwhile endeavor: Honoring the legacy of her late grandfather, Joe Robbie. Brilliant, complex, and too often misunderstood, as Sports Illustrated said best: “He would never get credit for it, but he was one of the smartest men in American sports.” Erica vows to change this through her words and film.
After 20+ years away, Erica recently relocated to her native Miami hometown, but still frequently returns to and works with clients in Aspen. She attributes her entrepreneurial hustle and spirit to her grandfather.
